Covers for the Holy Vessels
In the Romanian Orthodox Church three covers are used for the Holy Vessels: for the Holy Diskos (Paten), for the Holy Chalice (Gr. Potirion; Sl. Vozduh; Communion Cup) and for the covering of the both Holy Vessels (Diskos and Chalice); they are used in performing the Divine Liturgy. The covers are made of the same materials used in making the liturgical vestments.
Their theological significance is that of covering and adornment of the Eucharistic Gifts, but also has a utilitarian sense: covering the Holy Vessels for preventing the Gifts' loss or fall. On each veil it is embroidered a holy theme or at least the sign of the Holy Cross.
