Skufias

A skufia is a small or high kamelavkion, round, velvet, brimless, wore on the head by priests, monks and nuns. It is characteristic of the Orthodox Christian Faith. The skufia is part of the usual priestly vestments and does not have a liturgical function. Its presence on the head signifies humbleness.

A skufia may have different colors:

-the black skufia is worn by monks and lay priests.

-the red or mauve skufia is sometimes worn by lay priests and monks of high ranks: proto-synkellos, abbot, oikonomos or oikonomos-stavrophore, as well as by protopresbyters.

Sometimes the red or mauve skufia is worn by some hierarchs.
